Livermore

Livermore

The Livermore Valley was originally settled by the Costonoan Indians, and  during the Spanish era the Livermore region was part of Mission San Jose. The City of Livermore was established in 1869 by William Mendenhall who laid the town next to the railroad lines.  It was named for Robert Livermore, an English sailor who settled in the area in 1835.  His home was the Rancho Las Positas which encompassed much of the present day city.  Livermore is located in the Tri-Valley region East of San Francisco on interstate 580 providing easy access to both the Central Valley and San Francisco Bay metropolitan area.  Livermore is a mid-size city with a population of approximately 85,000.

Livermore was the largest and fastest growing city in the region for many years.  For much of its history, Livermore has been an agricultural community.  Vineyards and ranches continue to be an important part of the city today.  World War II brought significant changes to the region with the introduction of an air field and a major military base.  In 1952, the University of California established what is now called the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to do research on nuclear energy.  The Lab employs over 9,000 people in a multitude of professions to do research which is vital to our country.

Livermore is the epitome of California living with its urban amenities and relaxed lifestyle.  Surrounded by vineyards and golden hillsides, yet less than an hour from San Francisco--Livermore is ideally located for trips to the mountains or the ocean.  Great hospitality, community spirit, and a sense of history and love of art, good theatre--this is the image of California and an essential part of Livermore's appeal.

Tour California's Original Wine Country

Award winning quality wines await those who come to experience the 42 friendly wineries of the Livermore Valley.  The quiet and unrushed community of winemakers and growers who often double as tasting room hosts offers the same friendly hospitality that visitors experienced over a century ago.  Winemaking is a way of life as much as it is a vocation to these vintners, and given the Livermore Valley's ideal climate and soil, it is no wonder that everyone from fourth generation Livermore Valley vintners to the cadre of new, talented winemakers strives to make wines that reflect the character and potential of this region.

Sports and Recreation

With more than 41 facilities operated by the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District, there is no shortage of recreational opportunities.  There are plenty of sports leagues for youths and adults.  Livermore currently has four public golf courses--Las Positas Golf Course (18 holes and a challenging nine hole executive course); Springtown Golf Course (9 hole course with two sets of tees, allowing for 18 hole play; Wente Golf Course (18 holes adjacent to the scenic vineyards of Wente Vineyard); and Poppy Ridge (three nine hole golf courses set in the gentle rolling hills of South Livermore).   There is also Del Valle Regional Park which provides great camping activities, fishing adventures, horse back riding, swimming and boating.

Housing

Livermore boasts a variety of housing opportunities from brand new condo/townhomes in the renovated downtown to million dollar plus homes set amongst the Southside's vineyards.  There are also vintage homes from the late 1800's and early 1900's that attract buyers for their charm and character in the older central part of Livermore.  Livermore is a community that prides itself in a very diverse mix of peoples that love the small town quality of life, and a safe environment to enjoy life's adventures.
